How To Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer

How To Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer: Florist- Approved Tips

There's nothing quite like waking up to a vase of fresh flowers. Whether you are celebrating a baby, remembering a life or just brightening your home, fresh flowers add a certain pizazz that bring elegance to any space. At Flowers On Broadway, we love hearing that our arrangements were handled with love and care after leaving our doors, and it brings us even more joy to hear of the customers that help their flowers last longer!

We have good news for all flower lovers, were here to teach you the tips and tricks to make your flowers at home last longer. A few simple steps could help you enjoy your flowers for several extra days. Here's some of our florist-aproved flower care tips.

1.Start With A Clean Vase

Thouroughly wash your vase with warm, soapy water before placing anything inside. Even if a vase looks clean, bacteria could be building up inside so just be sure to give your flowers a the best possible start with a fresh vase.

2.Trim The Stems

Using sharp scissors or floral shears, cut about one inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45- degree angle. The angled cut allows for the stems to absorb more water, rather than sitting flat at the bottom of the vase where water uptake can be restricted.

3.Change The Water Every Two To Three Days

Every couple of days, empty the vase, rinse it thouroughly, refill it with fresh, cool water and trim the stems slightly before placing them back in the vase.

4.Use Flower Food

If your bouquet came with a packet of flower food, make sure to use it. Flower food helps reduce bacteria in the water and it contains the nutrients needed to feed the blooms.

If you run out of flower food, changing the water regularly is often better than trying a homemade mixture.

5.Keep Flowers Out Of Direct Sunlight

A cool room is best for fresh flowers. Try to avoid places in direct sunlight, next to heating vents, besides air conditioners and on top of elecctonics that  generate heat.

6.Keep Fruit Away from Flowers

Ripening friut realeases ethylene gas, which can cause flowers to age quickly. So try to keep your flowers away from fruit bowls, especially bananas and apples.

7.Remove Wilting Blooms

As flowers naturally age, remove any blooms or leaves that begin to wilt. This will keep the arrangement looking fresh and helps prevent bacteria from spreading to the healthier flowers.

Why Fresh Flowers Sometimes Don't All Last the Same Length of Time.

Every flower has its own natural vase life. For example, a carnation or altrsomeria will often last two weeks or more, whereas a rose or hydrangea may last up to a week with proper care and extra water. Every flower has its own unique vase life and care requirements. In our next Flower Tips blog, we'll take a closer look at some of the most popular flowers and share how long each one typically lasts! Along with a few tips to help you enjoy your fresh blooms longer. Be sure to check back!
